The Safety Pharmacology and Animal Resource Center (SPARC) is currently seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician and a process-oriented and motivated teammate to serve as an Associate Scientist to support the Program of Veterinary Care under the Lab Animal Science functional group in our Thousand Oaks, CA, location. This dynamic team is charged with handling all aspects of training and health care for a multi-species research colony. Your primary role will be to serve as the Lead for the training program with an additional responsibility of providing strong clinical support of different species used for in vivo studies. The qualified individual should be able to perform independently with minimal direction.

Training program responsibilities include:
  • Lead and manage the training program - provide training, train the trainer, oversight, continuous improvements, refinements, introducing new methodologies for training, ensure effective compliance and communication to trainers and trainees across all vivaria
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate scheduling of training events, documentation and competency assessments
  • Assist in training manual (guidance document) or video creation, review and revision
  • Maintain and manage proper documentation of all training and competency events
  • Develop a program of education for individual trainers and competency assessors
  • Training of other SPARC trainers
  • Manage e-learning training modules associated with SPARC access and IACUC requirements
  • Assist in updating IACUC training protocols
  • Handle animal ordering for the training colony and ordering of training supplies
  • Responsible for conducting hands-on training and competency assessment as appropriate
  • Provide innovation/opportunities of technique refinement and new techniques
  • Serve as a training liaison between Amgen and external SPARC partners for technical training
  • Assist in on-boarding new hires

Veterinary care and Animal Welfare responsibilities include:
  • Clinical case triage, record health information in animal medical records, follow-up and treatment for a variety of species; including USDA regulated species under the direction of the veterinarian
  • Communication to investigators regarding animal health cases and outcome
  • Ability to perform and assist with sedation and anesthesia of multiple laboratory animal species, technical manipulations, and specialized post-operative care
  • Ability to understand and implement laboratory animal care guidelines and regulations
  • Provide and assess appropriate enrichment of laboratory animals
  • Doing performance-based studies to enhance animal welfare and support the 3Rs and presenting/publishing the data internally and externally
  • Supporting Attending Veterinarian on Corrective and Preventive action (CAPA) based on IACUC, AAALAC, or USDA findings
  • Proactively reporting non-compliance and actively seeking to implement lean six sigma principles to improve animal welfare
  • All other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

Master's degree and 2 years of in vivo experience


Bachelor's degree and 4 years of in vivo experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • AALAS certification at the LATG level and/or other laboratory animal certifications
  • Lean six sigma white belt certification
  • Previous clinical experience treating animals in a research setting
  • Experience conducting hands on training of staff
  • Master's degree in animal science or related science field
  • Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills; can communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, highly organized with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to balance multiple and changing priorities along with fluctuations in the workload
  • High proficiency with basic and advanced techniques (dosing, blood collection) for multiple species
  • Solid understanding of The Guide, USDA regulations, AAALAC, and veterinary standard methodologies
