This position is responsible for developing the scientific parameters that underpin the optimal processing and formulation of the current suite of commercial products and for exploring novel processing and formulation manufacture techniques. This position will deploy fundamental chemistry and food processing principles to (a) ameliorate current formulation processing issues (e.g. evaporator fouling, drying) at the plant level (b) enhance formulation design criteria to minimize commercial processing issues (c) develop a suite of laboratory assessments that accurately predict commercial processability of current and novel formulations (d) explore the utility and capability of non-traditional processing modalities including, for example, microfiltration, high pressure processing (e) explore non-traditional processing logic schemes.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Using fundamental chemistry and DOE principles, develops and executes experiments to address processing issues with current suite of formulations.
  • Works closely with Quality Control and/or Operations in evaluating raw materials; reviewing process/ formula deviations and performing root cause analysis to address formula and or processing issues.
  • Uses Laboratory Information Management system to review/compile data to support R&D and Technical Operations
  • Identifies and evaluates materials for alternate and potential cost savings options.
  • Participates in pre- and post-manufacture reviews of new formulas to ensure compliance with finished product specifications.
  • Works effectively with raw materials vendors on sourcing and documentation needs.
  • Works effectively with processing equipment and technology vendors in evaluating novel technologies
  • Functions as a technical resource for various departments.
  • Drives innovation by contributing idea generation of new product/concepts that leverage new ingredients and or processing.
  • Compiles and reviews statistical data related to exception documentation, manufacturing and laboratory data.
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned, in support of R&D and Company success.
  • Ability to remotely address technical issues - after hours and on weekends (when required)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry with a strong scientific background.
  • Experience in experimental approaches to solving fundamental dairy/food chemistry and processing challenges, including heat stability and fouling
  • Experience in using basic laboratory and analytical test methods and equipment
  • Fluent user of Microsoft Excel and linked data spreadsheets. Highly proficient with MS Word and PowerPoint.
  • Acuteness for accuracy and checking own work. Excellent proofreading/editing skills
  • Demonstrated project management, math and teamwork abilities.
  • Quality: Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; Applies feedback to improve performance; Monitors own work to ensure quality.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities - often without advance notice
  • Knowledge of methodology used to test / release raw ingredients and finished products.
