The Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a highly motivated and capable Associate Scientist to join the Bioassay & Profiling group within the Discovery Technologies department in either our South San Francisco or Thousand Oaks CA research sites. In this role you will be a bench scientist that contributes hands-on to our compound screening efforts in support of Amgen's small molecule drug discovery pipeline, in collaboration with multiple therapeutic areas. The position focuses on the development, implementation and execution of in vitro biochemical & cellular assays to support HTS & lead optimization for promising therapeutic targets.

Position Responsibilities

Development & implementation of biochemical & cellular assays using a range of detection technologies in medium- to high-throughput formats in 384- & 1536-well microtiter plates

Execution of small molecule screening assay workflows, data analysis & data reporting

Utilization of liquid-handling and detection instrumentation

Operating & applying integrated robotic platforms (including scheduling software, protocol design & other programming knowledge) to the productive execution of routine screening assays

Maintaining fluency in the latest lab automation & assay technologies as well as scientific literature surrounding drug targets

Being an active contributor to the interpretation of results in group discussions

Exhibiting excellent teamwork and collaboration as this role requires an ability to work closely with other scientists in the group and across Amgen

Adhering to good laboratory conduct, documentation practices & lab safety guidelines

Basic Qualifications

Master's degree and 2 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 4 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

A Master's degree or Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology or related discipline and 2+ years of laboratory research experience in a drug discovery setting as part of a multidisciplinary team

Experience developing and executing biochemical or cell-based binding or activity assays in 384- or 1536-well plate format

Fluency with operating, implementing and troubleshooting laboratory automation

Cell culture expertise, including differentiation of iPS cells into cell types of interest e.g., cardiomyocytes

Technical capabilities with gene-editing (e.g., by CRISPR/Cas9 technology) to knock-out genes or to introduce functional tags (e.g., HiBit) to proteins of interest

Demonstrated initiative, teamwork, collaboration, an ability to multi-task and a passion for delivering results from routine assay execution and screening

Ability to create and establish priorities, manage work plans and adhere to timelines

Capacity to identify, evaluate, implement and become proficient in novel laboratory techniques

A flexible mindset, with strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills

Track record with setting-up and operating fluorescence/luminescence plate readers (e.g., Envision, FLIPR, ViewLux or similar) and liquid handlers (e.g., Echo, Bravo, Tempest, Multidrop or similar) to support routine execution of 384- or 1536-well microtiter plate screening assays

A scientific foundation in the understanding and implementation of a wide range of biochemical & cell-based screening assays and readouts (e.g., TR-FRET, BRET, fluorescence polarization, high-content imaging, luminescence and fluorescence-based reporter &/or label-free assays) supporting drug discovery on novel therapeutic targets
