The primary role of the Associate Director of the Career and Professional Development Center is to advise JD, LLM, MSLS students and alumni seeking summer internship or postgraduate work with specific focus on jobs in public interest and government.


Essential Job Functions

  • Advises and counsels JD, LLM, and MSLS students and alumni on matters related to career and professional development and the legal job search process with specific focus on public interest and government sectors. Assists students across all academic programs in determining career goals and objectives through self-evaluation.

  • Assesses articulated career interests and recommends avenues of exploration to meet goals, including referring students to mentors and other professional contacts.

  • Provides information regarding career options, job search strategies, and professional development.

  • Organizes and oversees the development and execution of educational seminars and workshops related to careers in government and public interest.

  • Provides students with assistance on cover letters, resumes and fellowship applications.

  • Stays informed and updated on government recruiting programs, such as the Federal Government Honors Programs, and public interest job fairs as well as fellowship timelines. Provides information and education to students on such programs and applicable timelines.

  • Forms and maintains strong relationships with public interest and government employers and stays current on changes to the hiring market within these sectors.

  • Contributes to the creation, editing and production of career publications, including handouts, newsletters, recruitment materials and other office publications.

  • Participates in marketing and promotion of Career and Professional Development Center programs and services to students, alumni, and employers, through social media.

  • Maintains positive relationships with employers, alumni, students, staff, faculty and community partners.

  • Communicates with The Justice Center at Albany Law School, the pro bono coordinator, as well as The Government Law Center to stay informed of opportunities.

  • As required, represents the Career and Professional Development Center at national, regional and local meetings of appropriate professional organizations and associations.

  • Assists with the programming, coordination and delivery during all phases of networking fairs, job fairs, recruitment programs, and other career development programs, which may include travel.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean for the Career and Professional Development Center.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of emerging employment markets, hiring practices, processes and trends particular to government and public interest employers.

  • Creativity, initiative, energy and professionalism.

  • A demonstrated passion for working with students.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

  • Strong relationship management and client development skills.

  • Effective time management skills.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to use web-based software and Microsoft Office Suite products.  Familiarity with Symplicity a plus.

  • Ability to travel.  Some overnight and weekend travel required.

Qualification Standards

  • Juris Doctor preferred. Graduate degree required (i.e., masters in counseling, business administration, or related field).  

  • 2-4 years of professional experience.  Recruiting or career advising experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience working in public interest or government a plus.
