Position Purpose

As a member of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) leadership team reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education (SADME), the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA) will lead programs and activities in the Office of Student Affairs and provide support to students enable their success in all phases of their education. The ADSA works with faculty, staff, and medical students to promote a positive, equitable, and inclusive learning environment for medical students. The ADSA also serves as the first point of contact for medical students providing both informal and formal mechanisms for students to safely share concerns and provides guidance or enables appropriate referrals to resolve conflicts. To fulfill this role, the ADSA must have no direct responsibility for student evaluation or grading.

Administration

  • Facilitates short- and long-term strategic planning, resource allocation, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the Student Affairs' programs and initiatives offered by Geisel.
  • Oversees the budget and goal setting for the Office of Student Affairs in collaboration with the Director of Student Affairs and the Senior Director of Administration and Finance for UME .
  • Provides oversight for the Director of Student Affairs, the Director of Learning Support & Student Accessibility Services, and the staff in the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Serves as the primary person to receive and review medical student concerns and grievances and facilitate the remediation:
  • Collects data and creates annual report about the number and type of grievances that are filed.
  • Identifies patterns of grievances and makes recommendations to responsible authorities to prevent similar problems in the future.
  • Oversees communication and publication of information that ensures all registered medical students, including visiting students, are informed of policies affecting their educational experience.
  • Ensures that all medical students are aware of mechanisms for reporting violations related to mistreatment, professionalism, Title IX, etc.
  • Ensures that appropriate faculty/staff are engaged to provide training that ensures an optimal learning environment with respect to these areas.
  • Provides oversight over the development, support, and tracking of co-curricular activities for medical students.
  • Provides oversight for medical student transitional events including, but not limited to, Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day Reception, Transition Ceremony, and Graduation/Class Day events.
  • Ensures that Geisel is compliant with all Title IX/ VAWA and accts as a key liaison for reporting requirements with respect to medical students by appropriate communication with the Title IX Office.

Programming

  • Leads the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive medical student services, medical student advising and mentorship, the coaching program, the learning environment and medical student mistreatment, career development and wellness.
  • Develops and implements policies and programming to support medical students' wellness and personal, professional, and academic progress. Provides oversight for Geisel's Healthy Students, Healthy Physicians student counseling program. Oversees coordination of medical student access to health care services.
  • Ensures student government/student organizations have adequate administrative support.
  • Oversees all policies and procedures related to The Office of Student Affairs and the annual preparation of the student handbook.
  • Ensures the Office of Student Affairs complies fully with all LCME accreditation
    requirements related to student affairs. Oversees the preparation and writing of all LCME and school-specific reports associated with the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Leads institutional communication regarding the Office of Student Affairs.

Collaboration

  • Meets regularly with other UME leadership to ensure initiatives and programs are aligned with and accurately represent the mission and objectives of the medical education program.
  • Coordinates close collaboration and acts as the key liaison with Geisel's Offices of Financial Aid and of Diversity Inclusion and Community Engagement.
  • Collaborates with leadership, faculty, staff, and students to ensure the learning environment of its medical education program is at its highest standard at all locations where required educational experiences occur.
  • Collaborates closely with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to ensure that Geisel's commitment to create, enhance, and participate in a community of respect, equity, and inclusion is in the student affairs' programs and processes.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education, Associate Dean for Clinical Education, and Director of Learning Support and Student Accessibility Services to monitor the academic progress of students and provide referral(s) to student counseling services as required and/or necessary.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs Career Advising to provide oversight for academic advising and career counseling across all phases of the curriculum.

Service

  • Serves on the Committee for Student Performance and Conduct as a non-voting member.
  • Represents the Office of Student Affairs on national committees.
