Alfred State is looking for two (2) dynamic professional academic advisors to provide completion driven advising as part of the college's new Academic Advising Center. These advisors will work with both students, faculty, and other professional staff to promote the success of Alfred State students. These positions will add to the current team of advisors to provide and coordinate professional development regarding best practices of active advisement strategies. Depending on experience, interest, and ability each advisor will focus on one or several targeted groups (degree completion, transfer students, undeclared students, student in online programs and/or at-risk students). These are 12-month positions that may require evening and weekend hours depending on focus area and need.

The successful candidate will:

  • Mentor and advise students on academic pathways to careers.
  • Assist students with course selection primarily in the first semester, including transfer and online students.
  • Prepare structured schedules for incoming freshmen and advise students on options through in-person, telephone, electronic, and orientation appointments.
  • Provide both one-on-one and group academic advisement, utilizing both walk-in and scheduled appointment times and maintain accurate records.
  • Collaborate with Career Development to assist undeclared students with decisions regarding majors, career opportunities, and employment connections.
  • Serve as a centrally located point of contact for students and make referrals to other resources and referrals.
  • Support new students at orientations, open houses, and other related public and internal events.
  • Work with all necessary systems related to job duties (i.e. Excel, Banner, Blackboard, Degree Works, and Starfish).
  • Maintain knowledge of all degree program requirements and assist with teaching assessments and courses in degree exploration.
  • Help transition students from academic advisor to faculty advisor in the discipline.
  • Implement degree planning software under Ellucian DegreeWorks.
  • Conduct special outreach to transfer students to ensure the student is properly advised on outstanding degree requirements. Act as a liaison with the department to resolve any transfer credit issues.
  • Conduct special outreach to online students to ensure the student understands the college culture and degrees from afar.
  • Manage student completion outreach and enrollment processes to assist students who have stopped out or students who are close to degree requirements and need assistance for degree completion. Advise on program alternatives if needed.
  • Implement (or assist with implementing) financial literacy campus programs and assist students with related questions.
  • Assist the Academic Advising Coordinator with professional development opportunities for faculty advisors as well as workshops for students.
  • Teach and/or assist in designing career exploration and/or college success courses.
  • Conduct assessment, data collection, analyses, and self-directed annual assessment of student success metrics related to advising.
  • Participation in regional, state, and national advising professional development professional development, college committees, and other projects as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, student services, a teaching discipline, or related field
  • Experience in academic advising, academic success coaching, mentoring, or counseling
  • Broad higher education knowledge including use of effective student success strategies
  • Demonstrated understanding of the educational role of effective academic advising in enhancing student learning and development
  • Ability to effectively and professionally interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and visitors
  • Experience working with diverse or at-risk populations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technology skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Higher ed teaching experience preferred
  • Online learning experience, a plus
  • Coaching students in online degree programs who are academically at risk, a plus
  • Financial Aid or Admissions experience, a plus
  • Recent professional development related to current college student learning and student success strategies
  • Career Exploration teaching or presentations, a plus
  • Experience with Blackboard, Excel, Starfish, Banner and Degree-Works
  • Experience with faculty development, a plus
