Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity in our San Francisco office for an entry level Practice Assistant ("PA") with our Employment Law Group.

As a PA, you will support the delivery of quality legal services to clients. Your responsibilities will include completing technical and clerical tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and computer proficiency.

You will gain experience and develop a greater understanding of litigation, focusing on the organization and indexing of case material. You will also work on more advanced projects that may be delegated to the PAs, and you will work alongside others in all aspects of litigation work.

You will perform an array of tasks, including but not limited to:
• Index and maintain document collections, deposition transcripts and exhibit library.
• Under direct supervision, you will assist with the collection and preparation of documents for production.
• You will organize documents in chronological order in preparation for depositions, trials, hearings, mediations and arbitrations.
• Index privileged and confidential documents for analysis.
• Effectively utilize automated litigation support databases and applications.
• Distill and organize evidence through the preparation of summaries, indices, chronologies, witness binders, charts and graphs.
• Review files and obtain photocopies from court, the recorder's office, etc.
• Use electronic research tools and the library to locate cases, statutes and legal authorities and compile these materials into binders.
• Assist in the organization of case materials and exhibits for motion preparation, hearings, trials, arbitrations and mediations.
• Draft memoranda and correspondence; maintain and oversee records of closed files.

• Bachelor’s Degree required with a strong academic background.
• Prior legal experience or the equivalent Practice Assistant experience is useful but not required. Prior office experience is helpful.
• Have flexibility and the ability to prioritize and organize tasks in a dynamic working environment.
• Be attentive to details, have flexibility with your work schedule and have excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills.
• Have the capability to become familiar with the procedures, terminology and documents relating to litigation and investigations.
• Ability to work in a forward-thinking working environment within a team environment.
• Advanced computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Strong time-management skills are required.

California Requirements: In California, Practice Assistants are not considered by the firm to be working as "Paralegals" as defined by the California Business and Professions Code, Section 6450 et seq. Experience as a Practice Assistant, however, may serve to qualify an employee to be considered for promotion to a paralegal position in accordance with the firm's advancement and promotion policies and procedures.
